Disrupting the ancien régime

[zengestrom.com] It'll be interesting to see what happens if they come out with a WiFi (or perhaps WiMax) Hiptop. On a more general level, I guess the point that I'm trying to make is that in order to be successful, such a device would require a HW/SW design approach that builds on the internet world, not on the telecommunications world -- and that can be challenging if the organization's resources, processes and values have developed to meet the needs of the latter one.
Some slightly related from Technorati and Google.
[Technology.foundnews.com] Technology Blog » Blog Archive » Disrupting the ancien régime: Its ability to go where laptops can't go, and do things that mobile phones can't do, will create new needs and new opportunities, which make people write new apps. It might be used to access place and event information in the form of annotated maps for instance. Or it might be used to download and watch TV shows. Or make them in the spirit of podcasting and guerrilla TV.
[Technology.foundnews.com] Technology Blog » hotspots: It's telecoms that's getting disrupted by the internet and not vice versa because the telecoms industry has not proven to be nearly as innovative as its bubble-prone internet counterpart. Bluntly put, this is so because it is structured as a closed world, which is dominated by the operators. It is a royal court that goes on with its internal power struggles. [Hyperorg.com] JOHO the Blog: In a study on learning and the usability of electronic books (compared to printed books), the Center for Information & Communication Studies at Ball State University found little difference in test results among students who used two styles of GemStar eBooks and those who used traditional text books. Still, 100% of students who used the black and white style eBooks and 50% of those who used color eBooks said they would not recommend their use to others. Students found such tasks as moving from page to page, finding a specific chapter in the text and searching for a certain word too tedious to pursue.
[Cartegic.typepad.com] Mapping Strategy: You can find responsible and irresponsible blogs, journalistic and non-journalistic ones, male-dominated clusters and female-dominated clusters, snarky blogs and serious blogs, and superficial, derivative, navel-gazing ones alongside ones of such depth and scholarship that they put even the serious press to shame. In short, blogs are a Long Tail, and it is always a mistake to generalize about the quality or nature of content in the Long Tail--it is, by definition, variable and diverse. The presumption that things that are less popular are less good is a classic fallacy; indeed, tail content is often of higher quality than head content, simply because it is uncompromising. Content that is perfectly targeted for some people will be, by definition, wrong for other people--and that's okay.
