JetBlue's DirecTV as Emergency Communications

[Archived in Entry]

http://radar.oreilly.com [O'Reilly Radar] (I didn't, though, want to freak out the person in the seat next to me, who was not watching the news, so I listed to the MSNBC audio and turned the screen off until the flight came in to land.) Apparently the LA flight had DirecTV disabled for their landing. (I believe this was an intentional choice on JetBlue's part -- while some commenters have guessed the TVs might have been turned off for landing as part of the regular safety process, they were on throughout the landing of my flight last night.) Different reports have had passengers reacting differently to this -- the AP reports one passenger saying they "would've been so much calmer without [the televisions]," while the Times reports another passenger saying, "We had live coverage up until about 10 minutes before we landed [...] That was the scary part, when they cut it off."

Some related posts from Technorati and Google.

the daily bj: http://www.therawfeed.com/2005/09/no-cnn-for-jet-blue-passengers.html By now you must have heard of JetBlue flight 292 which made a crash landing. And since nobody got hurt through this little escapade, I am free to analyze, criticize and make fun of if necessary. (via Cosmos)

mediabistro: FishBowlNYhttp://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlny  mediabistro: FishBowlNY: believe the irony, that we were watching our own demise on TV -- it was all too post-post-modern," passenger Alexandra Jacobs, a journalist at the New York Observer, told CNN's Anderson Cooper. After about an hour, she said, the TVs were shut off. (via Cosmos)

UB Singapura: Now when we watch TV, we see all kinds of crimes, diasaters and other bad stuff on screen everday, which builds some kind of indifference towards anything we see on screen. But when we see ourselves on TV, especially in a critical moment of life and death, what are we to feel? (via Cosmos)

theory.isthereason: Yesterday, just above Los Angeles, JetBlue flight 292 circled Southern California for three hours with its front wheels turned sideways, unable to be retracted into the plane. Satellite TV sets aboard the plane were tuned to news broadcasts as 140 passengers watched their own life-and-death drama unfolding on live television. (via Cosmos)

Gawker, Manhattan Media News and Gossiphttp://www.gawker.com  Gawker, Manhattan Media News and Gossip: We here at Gawker cover New York City, and we cover media. So you’d think we’d have nothing to say about a story in today’s Times recounting the tale of a JetBlue flight that took off from the Burbank airport, in Los Angeles, discovered a problem with its landing gear, circled for several hours, and then quasi-crash landed at LAX. Nickgray.net[Nickgray.net] nick gray dot net: WiFi for High Fly: LiveTV was aquired in 2002 by JetBlue for $41 million in cash (and the retirement of $39 million of LiveTV debt). LiveTV's inflight entertainment systems are partially responsible for JetBlue's success

Neopoleon.com[Neopoleon.com] Rory Blyth - Neopoleon.com: The leather chairs have either purple, green, or yellow(if I remember correctly) leather for the tops and sides of the seats colorful, stylish, and comfortable. They also have reasonably priced meals for you to purchase. This is kid friendly airline and I heard not one kid whine, scream, cry etc.

[Pulverblog.pulver.com] The Jeff Pulver Blog: December 2004 Archives: During what turned into a lazy day channel surfing on DirecTV and playing on-line poker, I couldn’t help but notice that a few of the movies that I first saw in the 80's which in some ways helped define a piece of the decade including: Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club and St. Elmo’s Fire were playing yet again.

Blog.fastcompany.comhttp://blog.fastcompany.com [Blog.fastcompany.com] Fast Company Now: The June 7 edition of HotelBusiness magazine sheds some light on Hilton Hotel Corp.'s efforts to improve the business travel experience. The Hilton Technology Room at the Hilton Garden Inn LAX/El Segundo -- formerly called the Room of the Future -- was recently revamped to include in-room technology such as a projection screen television, a display panel nestled in a mirror, a touch-panel remote, an ergonomic desk, and more.

Zen.org[Zen.org] zen.org Communal Weblog » General: Thank the goddess for JetBlue and the live DirecTV personal monitors. If they didn’t have Nick Jr, we’d have been in trouble.
