United Airlines Goes Wifi: Slowly They Turned...Step by Step....

[Archived in Entry]

[Thinking by Peter Davidson] Maybe there's some hope that United Airlines will find a future. Wi-Fi Net News reports that United is getting close to offering Wi-Fi on all of their domestic flights with rollout the end of next year. That's a great/essential start but if they can't design a good experience the only people who will benefit from the wi-fi equipped planes are the desert mothballers who warehouse and sell off used jetliners from failled airlines.

Some slightly related from Technorati and Google.

[Unwired] Airborne Wi-Fi? Count Me In!!: USA Today reports that United Airlines is already working with Verizon Airfone to test the service. Apparently, it has been demonstrated to the Federal Aviation Administration's approval that yes, this type of technology won't jumble pilot-to-ground communications.

[Engadget.com] United Airlines announces in-flight WiFi plans - Engadget - www ...: It really isn’t the flying itself we’re afraid of—it’s the prospect of being without our nurturing tether to the internet that makes us all nervous and agitated. Which is why we’re filled with heady anticipation at the news that United Airlines is planning to become the first domestic carrier to offer WiFi access on all of its flights (assuming that they don’t go out of business first, that is).

[Subterrain.net] United Airlines To Offer WiFi On All American Flights By Late 2006 ...: United Airlines has announced plans to offer WiFi services on all North American flights by late 2006. First, it has to clear each model of plane they fly to demonstrate that the Wi-Fi and air-to-ground systems don’t cause aeronautical system interference, although it’s pretty clear that Wi-Fi isn’t an issue given how many laptops must already accidentally have Wi-Fi signals shooting around on planes.
