Wireless Coverage Problems And Technology Solutions

[Archived in Entry, Wireless]

Lockergnome's IT Professionalshttp://channels.lockergnome.com/it [Lockergnome's IT Professionals] Fellow IT-management type Alex Scoble posed a wireless question in the comments from a random post yesterday (one that pictured my trusty Blackberry 7290), which led to a short series of comments of back-and-forth on wireless voice/data coverage. After thinking about it some more, I realized that I’m asked this type of question often, so I figure I’ll harvest some of the comments content and create a new post here. After all, it’s all about the conversation, and besides now I’ll have a link to e-mail to people, heh…

Some slightly related from Technorati and Google.

[T1 Rex's Business Telecom Explainer] Stratellites are Starting to Fly: That something might be no more than framing bits to keep both ends of the connection synchronized to define the individual time slots. That is not really important for Internet access, but does allow T1 lines to carry standard switched telephone calls as well as VoIP phone. T1 can carry 24 telephone lines to support a business PBX system. Each phone call occupies a well defined time slot in the T1 transmission.

Engadget.com[Engadget.com] Engadget - www.engadget.com.: All the CinemaSeries plasmas will include THINC (Toshiba Home Interactive Network Connection) which allows us to connect our PCs and “playback MP3 and JPEG files” using the TV remote. No mention of how this is done (software, drivers, OSes supported, wireless or tethered) and we’re a bit puzzled by the apparent lack of support for video — it’s a TV for crissake! All new widescreen HD models boast HDMI digital inputs (for rawkin’ uncompressed video), and all integrated HD models also include a CableCARD slot, TV Guide On Screen, and Toshiba’s new Channel Browser system which “brings the Back Button to the TV.” (Uh, didn’t we already have that in 1980?) Of additional note are two new 32-inch and 37-inch LCD TVs which feature integrated HD, 720p, come with and without built-in DVD, and sport HDMI and “PC inputs.” The 50HPX95 will be available in September for $5,500US while the 32 and 37-inch boxes (with built-in DVD) will be available in July for $3k and $4k respectively.

Radio.weblogs.com[Radio.weblogs.com] Reiter's Wireless Internet/802.11 Weblog: I was a journalist -- focusing on wireless -- for a long time until I became a full-time wireless data consultant in 1996.  There is simply no doubt that 802.11 is changing the dynamics of conferences and journalism.  At computer and wireless conferences, conference organizers are already getting grief from attendees if they don't have WiFi access.  Indeed, at the first 802.11 Planet conference in Santa Clara last year, some attendees were complaining because WiFi was available only in the exhibit hall, not in the meeting room.

[Blogs.pulver.com] Jon Arnold's Blog: Their messaging was consistent in the sense that SMBs are not well served in terms of IP solutions, and P2P is a great premise-based approach. Enterprises will be drawn to P2P because it is simple to deploy, economical, and delivers a rich feature set. The value proposition is straightforward at face value, but as the moderator, Bob Emmerson said, "it sounds too good to be true". Certainly, at face value, P2P promises a lot, and if it can deliver, the upside is pretty exciting.

http://www.toyz.org [Toyz.org] Mr Blog Entry - 07/20/2003: AT&T Wireless sucks: I have been with at&t for some time now having my business account and wirelesss account, and i have always had problems with customer service. What is it with companies today did they forget about us after aquiring our business. This one is directly for AT&T do you really feel that you are providing a good service(WRONG)!!!!!!!!!people are becoming fed up and im one more that you can add to the list.I ordered a phone for which i was unsatisfy with and how it performed. Now i have retrurned it the next business day three month later no one seems to have noted it.Is this convenience or is it another tacktic to prove that once again AT&T failed another customer.NOW! you have forwarded this matter to a collection agency,FORSTER&GARBUS(BEWARE)because this is totally uncalled for especially when a customer pays on time. Why does'nt anyone check before insulting us the clients?
